The Snowcastle in Kemi, Finland

Surely, there are not many other places where one can see snowballs walking around.
Every child loves to build snow castles, small ones and a little bigger ones. In Kemi in the northern part of Finland the biggest snowcastle in the world has been built. This snowcastle har brought Kemi into the Guinnes book of records, it has been shown in Chinese television, and Kemi is nowadays worldwide known because of this building, newly constructed every year.

The largest snowcastle in the world
This castle is more than it looks. It is a thema park and a cultural center, with many activities, conserts, exhibitions and other events during the winter season.

Doors to many adventures
This years architect, Eija Anttila, spent two months making the drawings of this castle. It was fun, she said.

Piedes fof art - birds made out of ice
The art gallery in the snowcastle is filled with statues all made of ice. Many of the are so fascinating that one would like to wish that it would be possible to preserv them in an ice box for the next season. Some of these pieces of art have been made by a chinese group of artists visiting Kemi.

An icecold - but still warm - exhibition of art
The first snow castle in Kemi was built in 1996 and got a great attention right from the start, with nearly 300.000 visitors the first year. Building and maintaining the castle costed about 6 million Fmk - it is not cheap to build although the material - snow - is free.

The snowcastle has a chapel of its own, used by many young couples for wedding ceremonies. However, the bride should have some warmer clothing than usual!
The chapell is in nearly everyday use by many churches in the region.

The Snowcastle Hotel. How about spending a night here - the bed looks comfortable, there is a television set - but the television table is made of ice and the walls of snow.
Wedding in the chapel and a wedding night in the Snowcastle Hotel! there are five rooms here, the temperature inside is below zero, but one can actually sleep very vell here. One of the rooms is a wdding suite. Believe it or not, during the weekends all the rooms are filled with guests!

Food and warming drinks are served in many places in the snowcastle. There is a fully equipped restaurant and outdoors one can have coffee and sausages, grilled by the customer.
