Rectal Hyperplastic Polyps


Hyperplastic (or metaplastic) polyps in the rectum is a very frequent finding especially in patients over 40 years of age. These polyps are small with a diameter of 2 - 5 millimeters, and they have about the same colour as the surrounding mucosa.


These polyps are benign, they do not have any malignant potential and there is no need for any therapy. However, they should be biopsied, a small adenoma cannot be distinguished from a hyperplastic polyp on macroscopic means.
