Radiation Proctitis or Proctosigmoiditis


Radiation Proctitis. Very prominent telangiectasias and ectatic vessels are typical findings.

Radiation injury is a frequent complication of radiation therapy for malignant diseases in the genitourinary tract. The injury can be acute, starting during the time of therapy or within a few weeks after finishing the radiation., or it can be chronic with a late onset, often several years after the radiation.


Radiation Proctitis

The main symtoms are diarrhea, stomach pain and bleeding. Stricture formation can cause bowel obstruction.


Signs of radiation injury in the sigmoid colon.

Medical treatment is quite inefficient, and new treatment methods are needed. Sulfasalazin, 5-aminosalicylic acid and steroids have been used but the effect on e.g. rectal bleeding is not satisfactory.

Radiation proctitis
 Radiation proctosigmoiditis is a frequent complication of radiation therapy used in the treatment of cervix or uterus cancer in women, prostate and testes cancer in men and urine bladder in both sexes. Every 7th patient treated for one of these diseases will have sign of chronic radiation injury in the rectum or sigmoideum. The injury is often worse in the rectum because of the high dose of radiation in this area, and more slight in the sigmoid colon. The small bowel can also be affected.
