Zenkerīs diverticulum An outpouching of the pharyngeal wall in the pharyngo-oesophageal region, probably most often resulting from motor abnormalities in this region. The symtoms are dysphagia, which may be transient for a long time and aspiration - sometimes during sleep causing aspiration pneumonia. Zenkerīs diverticulum is easily vizualised by an X-ray-examination, as in these pictures. Endoscopy may be difficult, the patient cannot easily swallow the endoscope, and Zenkerīs diverticulum is one of the reasons for the very rare complications - perforation - during endoscopy. Zenkerīs diverticulum is treated surgically.
