About one third of all cancers in oesophagus areoesophageal adenocarcinomas. The insidence of this type of cancer is quite rapidly growing in the western countries. A part of these cancers arises from Battett´s metaplasia in the distal half of the oesophagus, and as this metaplasia is a complication of chronic reflux disease, it might be said, that a part of all oesophageal cancers are a complication of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
