Endoscopic papillotomy (sphincterotomy) is the treatment of choice in the management of common bile duct stones. In a patient with acute cholangitis and/or pancreatitis, emergency Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreaticography (ERCP) and sphincterotomy reduces morbidity and mortality, and the associated risk is significantly smaller than the operative morbidity or mortality associated with a surgical exploration and cholecystectomy.
