Papilla of Vater

Papilla of Vater

Papilla of Vater is the opening of the bile duct and panceatic duct in the descending part of the duodenum. Through the papilla, bile and pancreatic juice pass to to bowel. During an ERCP-examination, the papilla is cannulated and the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts are filled with contrast medium.

Papilla Vateri

A normal papilla. Biopsies can be obtained easily from the papilla during gastroscopy if there is anything suspicious. This image shows a close-up of the papilla.

Papillotomy and Stone Extraction

In the picture to the left, a papillotomy (opening of the papilla by a cutting electric wire) has just been performed. In the picture to the right, a wire basket is inserted into the common bile duct in order to extract a stone.
