Colonic Interposition

Colonic Interposition
Oesophageal carcinoma is treated surgically whenever possible, and the main goal is to restore the ability to swallow. If the stomach cannot be mobilized sufficiently, colonic interposition by using the transverse colon can be used to restore the continuity. This is a picture of a part of the colon used the brigde the gap between the upper and lower oesophageal apertures.

Colonic Interposition
The transverse colon used here as a substitute for the removed oesophagus is looking quite normal, and histologic examination revealed normal colonic mucosa.
