Appendix

Appendix

The appendix is a rudimentary organ located in the bottom of the caecum. This, as the pictures below, is an endoscopic view from above, the opening of the appendix located in the centre of the picture.

Appendix

Appendix is best known because of its tendency to cause an abdominal emergency - appendicitis - in the western world.

A surgically inverted appendix

Appendicitis is the most common abdomal emergency in childhood and young adult life. Appendicectomies were sometimes made in this fashion, by inverting the appendix into the caecum.

Appendix

The appendix can vary greatly in lenght, as seen in many routine bowel x-ray examinations. The appendix has probably no useful function, and removing it because of appendicitis does not cause any symptoms.
