Diverticulum Oesophagi

High resolution image: Oesophageal diverticulum

Diverticulum in the oesophagus

There are tree types of oesophageal diverticulas. The Zenker type is located in the upper part, and may cause considerable symtoms. The second type is located in the middle part, they are easily seen on xray-examinations of the oesophagus on in endoscopy, they do not cause any symtoms, and do not need any kind of therapy.

Diverticulum in the oesophagus

The third type of diverticulas are located in the lowest part of the oesophagus, and probably related to hiatal hernias or other disorders in this region.

Here is another picture of an innocent diverticulum (to the right) in the middle of the oesophagus. The finding is sometimes quite impressive, but these lesions do not cause any symptoms.

Thsi type of lesion can - however rarely - cause symptoms. If the diverticulum is big enough and the opening is quite small, the food can get impacted into the diverticulum.
