In the distal end of oesophagus one can see the Z-line, dividing oesophageal mucosa from gastric mucosa. This is a normal finding.

It is important to see the Z-line, to exclude hiatal hernia or Barrets oesophagus. This is a normal finding.

In achalasia, the cardia region can look perfectly normal. However, one can feel a little resistance when passing the gastroscope through the cardia.
