Whipple, Georg Hoyt (1878-1976) An american physisian who in 1907 decribed a bowel disease now known as Whipples disease, at that time named lipodystrophia intestinalis. Professor Whipple got the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1934 for the studies concerning pernicious anaemia and its treatment. Whipple´s disease A very rare disease affecting primarily the intestine, caused by an actinobacterium Tropheryma whippelii. The disease most often affects males between 40 and 70 years of age. Diarrhea, weight loss and anaemia are the common symptoms, but the patients often also suffers from neurological and rhematological symptoms. The diagnosis can be made by a biopsy from the distal duodenum and this disease is trated by tetracycline or trimetoprim-sulfa for a long period of time.
