Yersinia pseudotuberculosis
Yersinia colitis
Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Yersinia enterocolitica can cause acute and prolonged colitis with fever and diarrhea. This is a picture of an acute colitis caused by Yersinia pseudotuberculosis. The finding at colonoscopy differs quite clearly from that in chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. Histologically non specific inflammation was seen.

This type of infectious colitis usually runs a benign course. If severe or complicated, it can be treated with antibiotics.

In children, yersinia infection can be impossible to distuinguis from acute appencidicits. Both Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersina pseudotuberculosis can cause an acute terminal ileitis, resembling Crohn's disease.In the lower part of the picture one can see a biopsy forceps.
Yersinia colitis
The diagnosis in this case was made from culture of the stool. Diagnosis can also be made quite firmly by serological tests (yersinia-antibodies).This is a close up picture of the lesion in a Yersinia pseudotuberculosis-colitis.
