Mallory-Weiss

Scars after a Mallory Weiss lesion

The Mallory-Weiss syndrome is a lesion in the region of the lower oesophageal sphincter, usually caused by a forceful vomiting. It can also be caused by excessive coughing. Often the patient has a hiatal hernia, and not seldom this lesion comes after alchohol intake. The lesion often bleeds, but the bleeding usually stops spontaneusly.

This is a scar after a bleeding Mallory-Weiss lesion.

In the middle of this picture one sees the gastroscope coming down through the hiatus, and on the left there is a dark lesion, a Mallory Weiss lesion, that has been bleeding.

There is no risk of rebleeding associated with a scar after a Mallory Weiss-lesion like this.

These pictures have been taken with the gastroscope in inversion, looking up towards the cardia, and the gastroscope is visible in the pictures. Just below the gastroscope is a thin scar caused by a Mallory-Weiss lesion in the cardia.
