Oesophageal Varices after Portal Wein Thrombosis

Oesophageal Varices
After portal wein thormbosis (caused by pancreatitis or for example schistosomiasis) a patient can get quite large oesophagel varices. These do not usually bleed - one reason is that the liver is uneffected and the patients do not have any coagulation defects.

Oesophageal Varices
This picture is from the same patient as above. He had a pancreatitis of cryptogen origin about 10 years earlier, and was found the have these quite big oesophageal varices in the oesophagus, and some varices were also found in the caecum.
