This middlge aged gentleman was examined because of some slight dyspeptic symptoms. He had not had any swallowing disorders, nor had he suffered from any reflux disease. His stomach was normal. This is the finding in the very upper part of his oesophagus. What is this finding?
An Inlet Patch is a small area of gastric epithelium in the upper part of the oesophagus. It is most often of no clinical significance and is probably of congenital origin. However, this heterotopic gastric mucosa can be colonized by Helicobacter pylori, causing a symptomac ulceration in the inlet patch. As seen in some of these images, these patches can be multiple.
