The summer of this year is here - at least on our half of the globe. During the summer - in June, July and August - the Quiz will be quite easy for two reasons. First, a quick answers save You time to be out in the sun. Second, You do not have to be an expert in endoscopy to manage in this quiz during the summer. So - if You are a health care professional just thinking of starting a career in endoscopy, please have a try - You might find it interesting!
This very young child came to the emergency ward accompanied by her parents, who were somewhat upset. An upper endoscopy was immediately performed and this is the finding in the gastric fundus. In the upper part of the third image the endoscope is seen entering the stomach. The "disease" was completely cured during that same endoscopy. So, what is this historical finding (it is historical, because we will probably never see this finding in our country again!)?
Answer
A foreign body (corpus alienum) in the stomach. The child had swallowed a coin, an old Finnish "markka". Since January 1st markka is not used as a currency in Finland any more, so the next time we will see a finding like this the coin will probably be an Euro.
Finnish coins (markka and penni) used until December 31st, 2001 (to the left). New Finnish (and European) notes and coins (Euro and cents) to the right
