The are images from the gastric body (the first 3 images) and the gastric antrum (the last 2 images) of a middle aged man who had suffered from dyspepsia for all of his life. The mucosa shows signs of a common worldwide infection. To get a firm diagnosis biopsies should be taken, but this finding is so typical, that one perhaps could start treatment immediately. Well, of course it might be better to wait for the results of the histological examination and other tests. What is this finding?

Gastritis caused by Helicobacter Pylori

Barry Marschall (to the left) and Robin Warren (to the right) were awarded by the Nobel Prize in 2005. These two doctors discovered the Helicobacter-bacteria (at first called Campylobacter pylori) in the gastric mucosa and investigated its role in the etiology of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. The Helicobacter story is one of the most successful medical progressions during the last two decades of the last century, and this discovery will save perhaps millions of life worldwide. This picture was taken in 1997 in Lissabon, Portugal. By the way, the first time Robin Warren visited Europe.
