This old lady came to an examination of her large bowel as she had suffered from obstipation for all her life - but now in the latest years also had quite loose stools sometimes. These are images from her large bowel, the first image from the caecal region. What is this finding?
Answer
Melanosis Coli
Melanosis coli is a brown pigmentation of the mucosa in the large bowel. The etiology of this pigmentation is the usue of anthraquinone laxatives (as cascara, aloe, senna). The pigmentation in itself is not dangerous but is a sign of excessive use of laxatives.
