A Mallory-Weiss tear in the cardia region due to forceful vomiting, often after alcohol abuse, can cause scarring. In patients with heavy and chronic alcohol intake - and many recurrent episodes of bleeding from a Mallory-Weiss tear, quite impessive scar formation can be seen, resembling granulomatous tissue.

A Mallory-Weiss tear can have other causes than alcohol abuse. Any forceful vomiting in a patient with a hiatal hernia can easily produce a tear. We have not however seen scar formation in the cardia region like in these pictures in any other setting than heavy alcoholism.
