Zealot A person showing excessive enthusiasm for something

Zeffix Trademark for a drug containing lamivudine, used as an oral anti-viral treatment for chronic hepatitis B, manufactured by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline

Zellwegerīs syndrome A rare congenital syndrome associated with brain and facial abnormalities, hepatomegaly and renal cysts. This autosomal recessive disorder was initially described by Hans Zellweger, a pediatrician from Iowa, in 1964.


Zenkerīs diverticulum
Zenkerīs diverticulum An outpouching of the pharyngeal wall in the pharyngo-oesophageal region, probably most often resulting from motor abnormalities in this region. The symtoms are dysphagia, which may be transient for a long time and aspiration - sometimes during sleep causing aspiration pneumonia. Zenkerīs diverticulum is easily vizualised by an X-ray-examination, as in these pictures. Endoscopy may be difficult, the patient cannot easily swallow the endoscope, and Zenkerīs diverticulum is one of the reasons for the very rare complications - perforation - during endoscopy. Zenkerīs diverticulum is treated surgically.

ZES Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome, see gastrinoma

Zidovudine A drug used in the treatment of HIV-infection.

Zieveīs Syndrome Hyperlididemia, hemolytic anaemia and icterus associated with alchohole abuse. This syndrome was described by Leslie Zieve, an american doctor, in 1958.


Z-line
Z-lineThe border between oesophageal and gastric mucosa oftgen quite clearly seen in the cardia region . If the Z-line is found higher than two centimeters above the diaphragm region, this may indicate a hiatal hernia.

Zolendronate A drug used to prevent bone fractures and pain in patients with cancer that has spread to the bone. Zolendronate belongs to a family of drugs called bisphosphonates. This drug might have a future also in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (ZES), see gastrinoma

Zone Region or area

Zone therapy An alternative form of therapy, where it is believed that pressing the joints of fingers and toes can affect the function of the body and relieve symptoms, mainly pain.

Zoo- (pre) Concerning animals, e.g. Zoonosis, a disease that can affect both animals and humans.
