W (U) Watt(s) Warfarin An anticoagulant drug ( a K-vitamin antagonist) used to prevent the blood from clotting, most often in the treatment or profylaxis of venous thrombosis. Treatment with warfarin can cause gastro-intestinal bleeding, and bleeding in other organs.

Warren, Robert A Australian pathologist, who was the first to identify a bacteria in the gastric mucosa especially in ulcer patients. The bacteria is now known ad Helicobacter pylori. Together with Barry J Marschall he investigated this bacteria and the results were presented in a conference in Brussel in 1983. The knowledge concerning Helicobacter has had a revolutionary impact on gastroenterology.

Water brush Excess salivation, describing a situation when the mouth fills with excess saliva dure to a vagally mediated stimulation in response to acidic reflux into the oesophagus. Watermelon stomach A gastric condition shere the mucosa especially in the antrum is red and angiomatous because of dilated blood wessels. This condition is also called Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia (GAVE syndrome). Watermelon stomach can cause gastrointestinal bleeding. The cause of this syndrome is not entirely known, but it can be associated with liver cirrhosis. The dilated mucosal blood vessels can be treated by coagulation (for example Argon Plasma Coagulation) endoscopically. WCE (Abbr) Wireless Capsule Endoscopy. The head of the pancreas, the duodenum, part of the stomach and other tissues in the surrounding are removed during this operation. Whipple´s disease A very rare disease affecting primarily the intestine, caused by an actinobacterium Tropheryma whippelii. The disease most often affects males between 40 and 70 years of age. Diarrhea, weight loss and anaemia are the common symptoms, but the patients often also suffers from neurological and rhematological symptoms. The diagnosis can be made by a biopsy from the distal duodenum and this disease is trated by tetracycline or trimetoprim-sulfa for a long period of time. Wilkie´s syndrome See Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) Wilms´ tumour A type of kidney cancer usually occuring in children below the age of 5 years. Wilson´s Disease A genetic disorder where the copper metabolism is abnormal, leading to copper accumulation in the liver, resulting in hepatitis and chronic hepatic injury, and in the brain, resulting in psychiatric and neurologic symptoms. Wilson´s disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. The disease is fatal unless treated. Penicillamine is the drug mostly used in the treatment of this disease. Wirelsess Capsule Endoscopy A new endoscopy technique, where a small television camera inside a swallowed capsule transmits images from the entire small bowel. The main indication for this endoscopic technique is gastrointestinal bleeding, where the source has not been found in conventional upper or lower endoscopy.
