JAMA The Journal for the American Medical Association, one of the most influential medical journals in the world. Jaundice , a condition or symptom in which the eyes and skin turns yellow due to accumulation of bilirubin. Jaundice can be caused by hemolysis (prehepatic jaundice), liver diseases (e.g Gilberts syndrome or hepatitis) or biliar disorders (eg obstruction of the biliary tract due to gallstone or tumor, posthepatic jaundice). See also hyperbilirubinemia. Jeghers, Harold Joseph (1904 - 1990) An American internist who worked in Boston and Washington DC. In 1949 he gave a detailed description of the syndrome then known as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome , a rare familial syndrome characterized by intestinal polyposis adn pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes. Jejun- (Pre) Consering jejunum Jejunectomy A surgical removal of jejunum, the upper half of the small bowel, or a part of it. Jejunoileitis Inflammation in jejunum and ileum, usually as a manifestation of Crohn´s disease. Jejunotomy A surgical incision into the jejunum, the upper part ot the small bowel. Jejunum The upper half of the small bowel, connecting the duodenum to the ileum. Jejunum consists of about two-fifthts of the smal bowel.

Jenner, Edward (1749-1823) An English doctor, who intrigued by the fact that milkmaids who had suffered from cowpox did not get smallpox invented vaccination. The first human ever vaccinated against smallpox was his gardener´s son, James Phipps, in 1796, and Edward Jenner published his observations in 1798. In a few years the significance of this finding was recognized, and from 1807 on vaccination became compulsory in some European countries. As a result of vaccination against smallpox the disease was eradicated grom the world in 1980, and Jenner´s discovery of vaccination is probably the medical finding which has saved most lifes during history. Edward Jenner also made contributions to our knowledge about coronary heart disease and rehumatic heart disease - and he was the first who ever published evidence that some species of birds migrated to the south in the winter. Joint hypermobility syndrome A common joint disorder affectin 10 - 30% of the population, which can be associated with soft tissue injury, visceral abnomalites and can cause chronic pain.

J-pouch A reservoar made surgically from the last part of the small bowel which is the connected to the anal opening making quite a normal defecation and continence possible in patients who need a colectomy because of ulcerative colitis or familial polyposis.
