Hemorrhoids

High resolution image: Anal hemorrhoids

The most frequent disease in the anal regions is hemorrhoids, consisting of vascular tissue in the anal canal. Internal hemorrhoids, here seen by inverting the colonoscope inside the rectum (the colonoscope is seen in the upper part of the picture), arise from the superior hemorrhoidal venous plexus. These small hemorrhoids are called "first degree" hemorrhoids, and do not prolapse during defecation.

A prolapse from internal hemorroids is a quite usual finding in the beginning of a colonoscopy.

Typical tiny internal haemorroids seen with a colonoscope inverted in the rectum.

Somewhat larger internal haemorroids seen through an inverted colonoscope.
