Normal Findings in Endoscopy: Valvula Bauchini - the Ileocecal Valve

High resolution image: The ileocaecal valve, Valvula Bauhini

Valvula Bauchini - the ileocecal valve - is situated between the caecum and the ascendens part of the colon. It is composed of an upper and lower lip, and behaves like a sphincter, preventing reflux from the colon into the distal part of the small bowel. Here the valve is seen in the lower part of the picture.

In an obese patient, the ileocecal valve can be quite prominent, as in this picture to the left, and in biopsies on can perhaps see fat beneath the mucosa, "lipomatoses"

The valve can also be quite flat, as in the left picture.
