Normal Findings in Endoscopy:
Descending Duodenum

High resolution image: A normal view of the descending part of the duodenum

The first part of duodenum is the duodenal bulb, and the second part is the descending duodenum. It is important that biopsies should be taken from this region to exclude e.g. celiac disease.

Duodenum is 20 - 30 cm long and usually divided into four parts, the bulbus, the descending part, the transversal part and the ascending part. These pictures are from the descending part of the duodenum

One of the main purposes of endoscopy is to obtain small bowel biopsies from the second or third part of the duodenum, in order to exclude celiac disease.
