Oesophageal Injury due to Alendronate

Alendronate is a drug used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis in women. It should be used with great care especially in patients with earlier oesophageal disorders. This patient got anaemia after using alendronate for some time and this was the finding in her oesophagus. Astonishingly, she did not have any dysphagia.

Another ulceration causing oesophageal stricture is seen in this picture. This patient had suffered from slight heartburn for many years, and after a few months of alendronate treatment, she experienced difficulties in swallowing and chest pain. The alendronate treatment was stopped and treatment with omeprazole was started.
