The first Ostomy day was held in 1991, and will be celebrated every three years. The aim of this day is to improve the rehabiltation of people with ostomy. The theme of the World Ostomy Day in 1999 is "Together, into the Next Millenium".
"No matter whether we come from a wealthy, developed country or a developing country, our needs as ostomates are the same. We all need good quality, affordable ostomy equipment and professional aftercare. We want to have the same opportunities and choises in life as people who have not had to undergo stoma surgery. Let us use World Ostomy Day to inform our local communities and people in authority about the needs of ostomates and by example demonstrate that ostomates have a great deal to contribute to their communities."
