Venue: Helsinki Fair Centre, Helsinki, Finland
Time: June 19 - 22, 2005

General information: "A stoma operation is a surgical procedure that can sometimes, even very dramatically, change human life. The picture of one self, especially body image, will change and the patient must pass through many physical, mental and social problems and challenges. The stoma operation can also be a shock for the family and ohter people close by. An enterostomal therapist is an important help to the ostomy patient. Enterostomal therapists have large experience about stomas, stomacare and appliances and they can help ostomate in adapting to a new situation, help in rehabilitation and in getting back to a normal life. The enterostomal therapists´education in Finland started in 1983 and the number of trained nurses is now about 90. Most of them work as part time enterostomal therapists, only 5 full time, usually in bigger hospitals. There are approximately 5000 ostomates in Finland. At the "8th European Congress for Nurses with Interest in Stomacare", the specialists over the Europe get together to share experiences, to learn the latest in wound, ostomy and continence care, to enhance their knowledge of appliances in the exhbition and of course to meet old and new friends and colleagues. I wish the best success for the congress!Tarja Halonen President of the Republic of Finland
